Joomla! Community Workgroup Report - August 2010

07.09.10

The Community Workgroup Teams were busy as ever during the month of August. Below are the reports rounded up from the Community Workgroup Google Group.

Recently, Barrie received an email asking questions about Joomla versions and upgrades, and how the system will work going forward. We are happy to take requests from our readers and address them here in our newsletter!

Google Goals. Love 'em, use 'em, make business decisions based on them.

If you didn't know what a "Google goal" is, its a feature of Google Analytics. It allows you to set up a specific and discrete goal for something on your website. Examples might be:

Making a purchase
Downloading a white paper
Filling out a contact form
Downloading a file

I'd thought I'd share some help I passed onto students from the Web 2.0 Marketing with Joomla Graduate Course. The classRead More...

In October 2009 the new Joomla training course - Joomlashack University opened its door to its first class of 100 students. For the last 4 weeks, these students have been learning how to Joomla with our rich video screencasts and tutorials and asking questions and networking in our forums.

Before launching Shack U, we knew we had a great product to offer. We gave leading Joomla figures a sneak look at the content and, as you can read yourself, they loved it.

As well as teaching insider Joomla tips and tricks to our first students, we have been taking feedback and improving the course. We have streamlined the student path through the learning content and added more courses.

After 4 weeks, we are ready to open our doors again.

The Community Leadership Team (CLT) will be hosting a summit on 1 October 2010 through 4 October 2010 in San Jose, California.  This will overlap the Joomla! Day West 2010.  Members of the CLT will be available for questions and feedback during the Joomla! Day event and are also on the presenter's list.

The CLT is tasked with the operation of the Joomla.org sites including the Extensions Directory, Forums, Resources Directory, Community Magazine, Community Portal, J!People and the teams of volunteers that facilitate these sites (known as the Community Working Groups).  One of the primary responsibilities of the CLT is to provide a safe and positive environment for the community.  During this summit, the CLT will meet to discuss ways to help the community and the teams and additionally plan and prepare for the future.  We want community input for topics that should be discussed.  To help facilitate this we have setup a simple form (below) for you to submit your anonymous suggestions for topics to cover.

Addtionally, we are going one step further - a Live streamed "Open for Questions" session will be held on 4 October 2010 from 9am - 10am (GMT-7).  This will be available for free to all community members by simply going to the JoomlaCommunity Livestream channel: http://www.livestream.com/joomlacommunity

We look forward to this exciting event and the feedback and participation of everyone!

Ever been in one of those situations in which you need to explain "what is Joomla" to a client? I just wrote an article on this topic. Hope you find it helpful when explaining what Joomla is, what it can do, and how it can help your client!

Our
friends at the CMS Association are back this spring with another
spectacular conference for Joomlaheads and open source CMS fans
generally- the second annual CMS Expo in Chicago!

Here's how they explain what CMS [...]

In Joomla 1.5, you always knew what version of Joomla you were running at a glance. It was located in the upper right corner of your screen. Unfortunately, in Joomla 1.6, that very handy feature is much less obvious in the default Joomla administrator template. It's down in tiny letters in the footer. Joomla security - one of the most frequent topics of conversation among Joomie's (usability is a close second) - is a complex area and the technicalities of it quickly get ahead of most Joomla users. Often, it's a conversation about the reputation Joomla has about security that starts "Is Joomla secure?" People are often concerned about the seeming high number of hacked Joomla sites, and people defending Joomla pointing at the need to update 3rd party extensions or use good hosts. There are many specific things you can do to make your site secure. They range from the obvious to making sure folder permissions are correct on the server, to esoteric like changing the jos_ MySQL table prefix that Joomla uses. For 99% of sites, security boils down to: 1. Use a good host, that means paying more than $10 a month. 2. Backup lots. Be like Nike... Just DO it 3. Patch often. Joomla and all your extensions.

Want to sharpen your Web 2.0 marketing skills and learn some Joomla at the same time?

This spring I am co-teaching a 3 credit 15 week graduate course at Marlboro College Graduate Center with Jen McKibben (of New England User group fame).

The JoomlaFCK Editor for Joomla 1.5 out now! | Joomla Editor

The third annual Joomla Day New England is now open for registration! This year's event will be held on April 2, 2011, at the Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro, Vermont. Located conveniently just a mile from Exit 1 on Interstate 91, we're 12 miles from Massachusetts and a river's width from New Hampshire.

We have set up the basic agenda for the Roadmap Meeting taking place in NYC on Friday, October 21. The first part of the meeting will be a series of lightning talks where people present their feature or the feature they'd like to see. This will give the attendees a sense of what people are working on. We'd then use that as a basis for breaking into different groups for the rest of the day.

During the afternoon, people will go to the breakout sessions they are interested in. These breakout sessions are a time to get something accomplished on the project. It might be defining needs or goals. It might be coming up with specifications for the coding. It might be setting up the structure for a working group and identifying people for different tasks. Each individual project will be at a different stage from ironing out the concept to assigning people to specific tasks.

This is what the schedule looks like:

The JED and Version Support

08.04.12

In mid-2011, the Production Leadership Team (PLT) announced a new release cycle for the Joomla CMS.  Rather than a "feature-based" release, which could take years for a new version to be released, the PLT chose a "time-based" release strategy.  Additionally, a new version numbering system was adopted to provide standardization to the versions.  If you are unfamiliar with this, or simply don't understand it fully, I recommend reading Mark Dexter's article in the Joomla Community Magazine this month.  The PLT's development strategy makes it clear that new versions will be released every 6 months and explains the goals behind this strategy.  The JED supports this strategy, however it has been a learning experience with new versions being released so quickly in comparison to the former release method.

Currently, you will see the version badges on listings for 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 2.5.  While this isn't ideal, it has helped developers and users incrementally move to the latest Long Term Support (LTS) version (2.5.4).  This cycle (from 1.5 to 2.5) has given the CLT the opportunity to review, in real-life, how the new cycle affects adoption rates on both Short Term Support (STS) and LTS versions and how best to adapt the JED to these new changes.

The following outlines the way versions will be handled in the JED:

LTS versions will be listed in the directory for 180 days (6 months) after End of Life (EOL).

STS versions will NOT be listed in the directory, instead a "Series" will included both STS and LTS versions - which means that starting with version 3.0 you will see a badge for "Joomla 3x Series" and developers, if they mark that version as available on their listing, will need to ensure that the extension is compatible with the latest release of the series.

This means....

Version 1.5 - Will be listed in the directory for 6 months after it's EOL.

Version 1.6 - Will be removed (see below for more details)

Version 1.7 - Will be removed (see below for more details)

Version 2.5 - Will be listed in the directory for 6 months after it's EOL.

Joomla 3x Series - Will be listed in the directory for 6 months after the EOL of the LTS version in the series (version 3.5)

What happens with 1.6 and 1.7 badges?

The versions of 1.6 and 1.7, still currently in the directory, will be removed as of April 30, 2012.  There are still a substantial amount of listings that have not marked 2.5 compatibility and the JED would like to give these developers an opportunity to get caught up.  If you have a listing that isn't marked as 2.5 compatible but is marked as 1.6/1.7 compatible, you have until the end of the month to mark 2.5 compatibility

As of April 1, 2012, the JED will only accept listings that are compatible with the latest Joomla STS Version (2.5).  You may still mark the extension as 1.5 compatible, but no 1.5, 1.6, 1.7-only listings will be accepted any longer.

What happens with pending listings that are not 2.5 compatible?

These listing submissions will recieve an error code and won't be published until a 2.5 version is available and marked/uploaded on the listing.  Please remember that if you mark both 1.5 and 2.5 compatible icons, you must attach both versions to the listing and the download link must point to a page that includes both downloads.

Upcoming Joomla Days

17.08.11

If you've never attended a Joomla Day event, you are missing out on great fun! Joomla Days are the Joomla community's regional events, spreading the word about Joomla and showing how it works. Each Joomla Day is a unique experience, happening in a variety of environments, with different tracks and themes. One thing they all hold in common, though, is terrific networking, making new friends and catching up with old ones, putting faces to those social networking names, and beer.

The Joomlashack Difference

25.11.09

There are lots of places to buy a Joomla template - but Joomlashack is the only one to offer lifetime template updates and a 30 day money back guarantee! One of the defining characteristics of Joomla compared to other open source CMS's is the rich variety of professional templates that are available. There are, of course, the poorly coded sweatshop template sites, but lets take a look at a comparison of the others.
