Joomla SEO 1.5

kcw.jpgEmbedding videos in Joomla content can be a little tricky sometimes; with a stock Joomla site you really just have one main content area to bung embed code into, but you usually have a wysiwyg editor installed so that code gets messed up in html translation mistakenly or otherwise doesn't display whilst editing your content etc...  Of course, to make the job easier, extensions have emerged as plugins that let you use special tags in your content (such as Allvideos), but well, who wants to remember how to properly reference a 3rd-party hosted clip right?

I've been excited about Kaltura for some time - its an Open-source video platform which works just like some of the major commercial ones (eg. Brightcove.) - only its cheaper (free?) and has some cool tools to let your community remix videos right in your website - using a huge assortment of samples; from your collection to anything hosted on Kaltura member sites.

Kaltura just released an extension for Joomla and it looks pretty amazing; with it, you can:

  • upload/embed videos,
  • embed flickr/myspace video/photo/audio media in your articles,
  • manage media in a central control panel,
  • customize the embed player on your site,
  • edit and remix video to embed in your site and much more!

Now, Kaltura still doesn't solve the issue of embedding content from 3rd party hosts like youtube, vimeo, etc..; it seems to offer myspace video embeds (ahem, what?) and thats about it.. so you're still going to have to use somethign like the Allvideos plugin to easily embed them, but Kaltura can be a very easy way to upload and embed original video - you can upload video files or record directly from your webcam...

home_illustrate_basics.jpgI've advocated the benefits of keeping control of one's own data for some time - with the proliferance of 3rd party/hosted services on the web in the past few years though, I've had to rethink why it is important to not use them to host content or parts of your website.

One of the coolest innovations I've seen in the past couple of years on the web, which has me favouring hosted solutions rather than local ones, are 3rd party comment system providers.  Its now possible to have a service like Disqus or IntenseDebate power the entire commenting function for a site via a javascript call to their service!

This is really groovy for many reasons - including:

  • Not having to worry about upgrading the version of your Joomla-local commenting extension,
  • You can optionally include commenting wherever you want on your site,
  • Because its the business of these service providers to make their system as kick-ass as possible, you know that you'll get all the newest features/functionality when it comes out,
  • They're free.

Recently, the good folks @ Rockettheme released a great extension which brings the simple power of using either Disqus or IntenseDebate (which is owned by Automatik - the Wordpress people) to Joomla and I recommend installing it on your Joomla site today.

We were about to switch over to using Rokcomment with IntenseDebate here on whyjoomla.com this week (as we've already done @ plantseedling.com) but are holding out to see what a new version of iJoomlacomment will look like when akismet is working properly and recaptcha has been implemented...

Honestly, if you're rolling out a new site which doesn't have old comments then its a no-brainer; grab Rokcomment and breathe easy knowing that you'll likely never have to login to your site to delete spammy comments and that your site users will find it a breeze to post their thoughts on your articles.

Joomla has just released the new 1.5 stable version, please check it out and try a sample install on your own local pc and see how the SEF options also work in your windows based machine! Joomla 1.5 Stable release

On behalf of the Community Leadership Team, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Sandra Warren and Matt Lipscomb as our newest members.

Sandra has been instrumental in organizing a brand new team to help with the beta launch of People Site.  As co-admin, her efforts have helped steer our community into new territory here on joomla.org and she's done a tremendous job of it.  Sandra and her team are now hard at work getting the People Site ready for its upcoming Official Launch.

Matt currently works on various Community Workgroup teams including the Site Showcase, Support Forums, JCM and the JRD.  He does an outstanding job in all.  Some of Matt’s more recent contributions include a discussion with the community to find ways to make JRD inclusion easier and the Joomla! Weekly Challenge which encourages people to contribute in various ways to the project and global community.

We think Sandra and Matt will be excellent additions to our team and we thank them for taking on this added role to their current positions in the project.

Sandra, Matt... Welcome!

The Joomla Project is currently looking for volunteers to act as webmaster for our community.joomla.org site.

Background:

This particular website is one of our newer, but also growing sites. We feel it's success is also linked to the successful growing and maintaining of the Joomla Community as a whole. Currently the site is maintained by a few capable people, but we feel having an injection of fresh blood into the mix may be just the thing needed to keep this sites growth on track.

It should be noted that we already have a number of responsible people adding information and maintaining parts of this site already. For example, the Translation section of this site is maintained by the Translation WG.

Duties will include (but not limited to):

  • Assuming overall management of the users that are given access to this site.
  • Working closely with other parts of the project to supply 'space' on this site as the need arises.
  • Liaising with members of the Development Team if/when certain parts of this sites code needs adjusting (added functions etc).
  • Overseeing the approval of comments to blog and community submitted content.
  • Working on or with people as template adjustments may be needed to accommodate changes to the site.
You will need:
  • The ability to work well together and get along with others.
  • A good grasp of Joomla administration.
  • Some basic template skills would be advantageous.
  • To be familiar with the Joomla Community.
  • To be able to commit regular time each day to manage this site.
  • To be committed to the success of Joomla, and want to be a sharer in that.
  • A good grasp of English.

It is anticipated that perhaps one of two individuals may be able to work together to spread the load managing this site in the future as well, so don't let the future growth of the site scare you.

Being the webmaster of such a high profile and high traffic site like this would certainly look good on your resume, but we'd like to think you'd also be applying so you can contribute to Joomla.

Only serious candidates should apply. Please make application by sending as many details as to why you are the person we're looking for to: webmaster_position@community.joomla.org (this email address will be removed once we have filled this position)

Replies to this blog post will not be treated as applications.

The Joomla! User Association Norway (Foreningen Joomla! i Norge) and the Joomla! Project are delighted to announce a sponsorship of 10,000 kr (about $1500) for development work toward a system for easily transferring wiki help content to a joomla instance. There a specific interface will make it easy for Translation Teams to provide localised help. This will provide vital support the project's vision of "people around the world using their preferred languages" and "People publishing and collaborating in their communities and around the world."

Rune Rasmussen from the JUA Norway Board said "Norwegian is as important for the Norwegian community as English for the US or the UK community or French for the French speaking community. But since Norway is a country with few people (4 mill.) our challenge is to have enough resources to do the work." This project will improve the efficiency of translating help materials for language communities around the world.

As Ole Ottosen, Translation Coordination Team, put it "This task will need a custom coding effort. The support from Norwegian community now has made it possible to free up some coding hours and provide a solution in the interest of the greater international community." The project should have a solid start with this sponsorship, and we hope other communities will also provide financial support to help Joomla! achieve its internationalisation and localisation goals.

Ryan Ozimek, who chairs the OSM Capital Committee, said "There are four great ways for people to support the project: development (code), community contributions, third party ecosystem creations, and direct financial support.  Financial support to the project is integral to our community's success because that ensures the infrastructure support that can't strategically be upkept without financial support. Your funding goes directly to paying for our robust servers, protection of the community's well built brands and copyrights, and supporting our wonderful JoomlaDay events worldwide." Potential sponsors for this or other projects should contact Ryan.

Joomlashack has created a great little widget that's been needed a long time for Joomla websites, a picture editor that runs live as you are editing an article.

Picnik is the best online image editing program available, and Joomlashack has created an integration that allows you to edit your images using Picnik without ever leaving Joomla!

Joomla is one of the most powerful open source content management systems on the planet. Its different versions have been downloaded millions of times and its used on millions of websites. Joomla 1.5 had many improvements over 1.0, but now, with the release of the new version 1.6, several important features have been added like ACL, infinite categories, automatic updates, a new highly usable wordpress-like backend and improved SEO. These features mean that Joomla is now on a level playing field with other CMS's like Drupal and Wordpress.

Although its been a few weeks now, I still have not posted about what a great event the recent Joomla Day was in Brattleboro, Vermont. The organizing team did a great job with the event, and the lunch time barbecue was great.

There are slides and podcasts of all the presentations available...

Microsoft has signed the JCA (Joomla! Contributor Agreement), and we've got some of their code in the Joomla! 1.6 trunk. There, I said it. It feels like it should be so much more doesn't it? Don't worry, I won't end the blog post there.
