How many times have you built a site, and your client asked you for some additional information about users who register for the site? They wanted to collect their mailing address, date of birth, a favorite book, or even they just wanted them to accept the terms of service. Unfortunately, in Joomla 1.5, you would have had to install a complex extension like Community Builder to acheive this functionality. Now, however, it's built into Joomla 1.7.

With Joomla 1.6 release candidate upon us, one of the first new features many Joomla enthusiasts are likely to explore is ACL (access control levels). Like most software, you change settings and see what happens.

Whatever you do, be very careful when configuring the Super Admin permission.

There are lots of places to buy a Joomla template - but Joomlashack is the only one to offer lifetime template updates and a 30 day money back guarantee! One of the defining characteristics of Joomla compared to other open source CMS's is the rich variety of professional templates that are available. There are, of course, the poorly coded sweatshop template sites, but lets take a look at a comparison of the others.

After three long days at the Joomla Leadership Summit, a team of eleven Open Source Matters members from four continents met in San Jose, California for our annual summit. Yes, much pizza was eaten. No, we didn’t spend too much time swimming in the hotel pool. Instead, we worked hard through seven sessions to pack as much Joomla goodness into two days as possible. We recognized that we couldn’t solve all our challenges in this short period, so we created small groups and focused on action items to help build momentum and progress.

OSM Board Summit 2011

Your OSM team, from left-to-right: Akarawuth Tamrareang, Thomas Hampton, Marijke Stuivenberg, Ryan Ozimek, Altansukh Tumenjargal, Robert Deutz, Alice Grevet, Jacques Rentzke, Sandy Ordonez, Paul Orwig, Dianne Henning

Now, for your viewing pleasure, here’s our report-back to the community.

As many of you know, in late 2009 it was decided by OSM and the project leadership to contract with Andrew Eddie and Louis Landry and to pay them for working on the Joomla! project. This was a very big step and was only undertaken after much discussion and careful consideration. There was strong agreement in the OSM and project leadership for this decision. Formal and informal polling of community members found a substantial majority in favor of the concept, with a minority opposed to it. Some of those opposed had strong feelings against it.

From the start, the plan was for Andrew to focus on coding for version 1.6 and for Louis to help support Andrew but also to work on longer term and infrastructure projects. This general plan is still in place today, although some of the specifics have changed over time as version 1.6 has moved from alpha to beta.

The Production Leadership Team (PLT) was tasked with the role of setting the priorities for this work and providing supervision and oversight. Initially, this was done informally. Recently, we have instituted a more formal process whereby the PLT has started issuing monthly reports to OSM and the community on the work completed and goals going forward.

What does this mean to you? Just this. The PLT makes the decisions about what gets worked on and the priorities going forward. So, for example, if you have ideas or concerns about what either of these individuals is working on (or not working on), you should express them to the PLT, not to Andrew or Louis.

If you don't like the whole idea of paying them for doing this work, then you are absolutely entitled to that opinion. But again, your difference of opinion is with the project leadership and the OSM leadership, not with Andrew or Louis.

I only wish the PLT could take the credit for the fantastic work that these guys have been doing during this time. But that credit goes to them alone.

In a community as large and diverse as ours, there are always going to be disagreements. This issue is particularly sensitive and one on which people can have very strong feelings. I hope that people on both sides of this issue can work together and keep their disagreements respectful.

The third annual Joomla Day New England is now open for registration! This year's event will be held on April 2, 2011, at the Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro, Vermont. Located conveniently just a mile from Exit 1 on Interstate 91, we're 12 miles from Massachusetts and a river's width from New Hampshire.

At Joomlashack, we know that as on online business, email deliverability is very important. Whether sending newsletters or transactional emails from systems, they won't do much good if they don't reach people's inbox.

We use iContact for our newsletters, and have had great success with it. Recently though, we have been looking at supplementing it with another system for our transactional emails/ecommerce etc.

Once interesting alternative is Infusionsoft, which has a rich API, and ecommerce functionality built right in.

But what about deliverability?

Mr Tester.... start your engines!

I have recently been working with an Education School - The Upper Valley Educator Institute - to migrate their internal email systems to Google Apps Education Edition.

Their email was stored on a traditional server and everyone was using a different email client (no-one had backups!). Google Apps would provide some clear advantages in efficiency and management.

The Community Workgroup Teams were busy as ever during the month of August. Below are the reports rounded up from the Community Workgroup Google Group.

The Joomla! Community Leadership Team (CLT) is currently seeking new members to join us on our team and we want YOU, our fellow community members, to nominate those you feel would be well suited! (yes, you can nominate yourself as well ;) )

If you’ve been around Joomla for a long time then you’re likely already aware of what the CLT is, what we do and how we fit into the project structure.  If that’s the case, feel free to skip to the bottom for the nomination details.

For those of you who don’t know or who aren’t 100% sure, we’ve listed some details here to help outline the whole picture.

What is the CLT?

There is a large working group within the project called the Community Workgroup (CWG) under which certain sites/areas fall. Those areas are Joomla User Groups (JUGs), the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED), the Joomla Resources Directory (JRD), the Joomla Community Magazine (JCM), the Joomla People Site, the Joomla Community Forums, the Joomla! Community Portal, the Vulnerable Extensions List (VEL) and Joomla.org main site. Hundreds of volunteers make up the teams that manage those areas.  The Community Leadership Team, CLT, is the leadership arm of the project responsible for the Community Workgroup , CWG as a whole.

What does the CLT do?

Our CLT roles in the Community Workgroup includes recruiting new volunteers, working with the teams on daily tasks, adding necessary features to the various directories and sites, helping the teams roll out new sites when ready, as well as the overall responsibility of ensuring a healthy atmosphere for all contributors.  We also communicate on a regular basis with one another, members of our teams, community members and our fellow teams the leadership group - the Production Leadership Team (PLT) and the Open Source Matters board (OSM).

In addition to our roles within teams, the CLT is also responsible for the organization and upkeep of the various sites in the Joomla.org family. This includes duties such as software updates, security monitoring, feature updates and overall site management.

There are also a number of administrative and communicative responsibilities where we could use some additional help such as blogging, keeping the community updated and involved in our news and decisions, community outreach and evangelism, scheduled and recorded meetings, publishing of meeting minutes and outcomes, managing our People site group, and utilizing other social media areas such as Twitter, facebook and YouTube.

We also want make a larger effort towards internationalization of the sites and communication between various regional and international communities and joomla.org.

Who is the CLT looking for?

So as you can see, the CLT has a lot on its plate and we could really use some new, fresh faces and ideas and experience to help us with these tasks, reach goals and move the Community Workgroup forward.

We’re looking for people with the following skills and abilities:

In General:

  • comfortable working with people of different backgrounds - be they cultural, professional or any other
  • Somebody who can work well on their own but also contribute to combined goals as a member of a team
  • Demonstrate problem solving abilities
  • Ability to handle controversial situations
  • Some experience working/volunteering for an open source software project, preferably Joomla, though experience that can be shared from other projects is certainly welcome
  • General conduct of a professional and considerate nature on Joomla.org as well as other sites and media channels
  • Must have a reasonable and consistent amount of time to focus on your leadership responsibilities each week.
  • Must be willing to read and agree to abide by the Joomla Code of Conduct

Some specific skills that would be an asset to the CLT:

  • Good administrative skills - Not necessarily due to professional experience, but if you’re an organizer, planner, get-stuff-done kind of person then let us know
  • Management skills - whether in business or volunteer roles, if you’ve been a leader in the past, we’d love to know more about you
  • International community members with English as a first or second language
  • Writing/blogging/communication skills with a general interest in that area.
  • An interest in, and aptitude for making use of, social media channels of communication: twitter, facebook, youTube, etc

So if you or someone you know fits any combination of the above criteria and would like to be a part of Joomla’s Community Leadership Team, please send us an email with a name, some information about your nominee and why you think they would be a good fit,  and a preferred email address and/or Skype or GTalk details for contact.

We will be welcoming nominations from today through Friday, June 10, 2011. The current members of the CLT will be reviewing and considering all nominations from which we will select and contact those we feel would be the best fit to join. You can send your email to nominate@community.joomla.org Please be sure to include “CLT Nomination” in your email title.

Get involved with the future roadmap

03.09.11

Joomla 2.5 is due out in January, which is the culmination of the 1.6/1.7/2.5 series. Now is the time to be mapping out those things we want to accomplish in the next series, which will culminate in the 3.5 release in July 2013.

At the recent joint summit we discussed the process for establishing goals and milestones for the long-term Joomla releases. We want more seats at the table for the technical discussions on how to move things forward. Once every six months the PLT and developers will meet just before or after an existing event to work on the roadmap.

Our first Roadmap Meeting will be on Friday, October 21, 2011 in New York City, the day before Joomla! Day NYC 2011. This is a working session that is open to anyone interested in working on designing or creating features for the next major release of Joomla. Our goal is to come out of this meeting with working documents for implementing different features.

There is no cost to attend the event but you must register in advance. Not everyone with an interest in working on this will be able to attend in person so we are exploring options for including virtual attendees.

We encourage everyone to have a voice and to vote or add ideas to the Idea Pool at ideas.joomla.org.

For details, see the posting in News at the Developer site.

Comments are welcome and can be shared in at the JPeople site in this thread

Easy custom home page definition with Joomla 1.5

09.05.09

picture_20There's a really simple new approach to defining what a site's default homepage is now with Joomla 1.5: All you have to do is go to Menus>mainmenuand, select the menu item you'd like to be the homepage and hit the new 'Default' button - you'll see a star appear in the table row for that item.  Now, whenever people land at your site they'll see that page/view/component!

2012 Goal setting and budget planning proposed process

07.11.11

With an October 25th announcement on the public Joomla! leadership email list, work has begun on the Joomla! project's 2012 goal setting and budget planning proposed process. 2011 was the first year that the Production Leadership Team (PLT), Community Leadership Team, (CLT) and Open Source Matters board of directors (OSM) put in the extra effort to first define their goals for the year before they began work on their parts of the project's overall budget.

Benefits of the goal setting and budget planning process

These are the benefits of having PLT, CLT, and OSM put in the extra effort to first define their goals and priorities for 2012 and also asking them to provide input on the areas of the 2012 budget that their teams are responsible for:

  • Allows our budget to be a more effective tool for supporting the project's planned priorities for the upcoming year.
  • Allows each leadership team to better understand what the other leadership teams are planning to work on, which will improve inter-team collaboration and support.
  • Allows the community to be aware of goals and priorities for the upcoming year, which will improve transparency and openness and enable increased support and volunteer contributions.
  • Will make it easier to bring in more sponsorship contributions, due to prospective sponsors having a better understanding about what initiatives their contributions will be supporting.

Changes made for the 2012 proposed process

Some significant changes have been incorporated into the 2012 proposed process based on lessons learned from the 2011 process. Some of these changes are a result of lessons learned during the 2011 process, including feedback from the community. Other changes are based on work that came out of a session at the July 2011 Joint Leadership Summit about creating a public unified roadmap for the project. These are the main changes that have been made for the 2012 proposed process:

  • Each leadership team has been asked to define a mission statement for their team that supports the project's current overall mission statement. Each team's mission statement will be a helpful starting point to confirm that their top goals and priorities are aligned with their mission statement.
  • Time has been included in the proposed process for community feedback both before the leadership teams finalize their goals, as well as before the draft budget is submitted to OSM for formal approval.
  • A more detailed framework has been provided for documenting milestones, action items, and resources that are associated with each team's top goals and priorities. Each leadership team can use this documentation to help with their budget planning and their implementation work for each of their top goals and priorities. If this documentation is completed it can be published alongside the both draft and approved budgets which will help community members see where those goals tie to specific budget line items.
  • Recommendation that each leadership team publish a blog following each calendar quarter in 2012 to provide an update to the community about their progress toward their 2012 top goals and priorities.
  • Creation of a sample timeline that aims to have a budget ready for OSM's formal approval in January 2012.

Potential impact of proposed leadership structure changes

Proposed leadership structure changes that were intially discussed at the July 2011 Joint Leadership Summit may result in changes to the project's current leadership structure sometime during 2012. It will likely take quite a bit of time to work out the details of any approved leadership structure changes, so if we want to have a set of full year 2012 goals and a budget that is based on those goals, then our best path to accomplishing that will be to rely on our current leadership teams to carry out this work now.

Sample timeline for the 2012 proposed process

The sample timeline for the 2012 proposed process is shown below. As was the case with the 2011 process, participation by leadership teams in the 2012 proposed process is voluntary. Each leadership team may choose to take a different path regarding both their goal setting and their budget planning work for 2012.

  • October 25: Announce 2012 goal setting/budget planning process to leadership teams.
  • November 2: OSM Treasurer publishes blog about 2012 goal setting/budget planning process.
  • November 2: Each leadership team creates their mission statement, and begins working on their proposed top 2012 goals/priorities.
  • November 5: OSM Treasurer provides budget spreadsheet templates to all leadership teams.
  • November 9: Each leadership team defines their proposed top goals/priorities and they each independently publish a blog/JPeople discussion or other method of collecting community feedback about them.
  • November 16: Public feedback on each leadership team’s proposed top goals/priorities closes.
  • November 30: Each leadership team finalizes their top goals/priorities and their milestones/action items/resources.
  • December 7: Each leadership team submits their proposed 2012 budget to OSM Treasurer along with their mission statement, goals/priorities, milestone/action items/resources document.
  • December 21: Budget committee reconciles consolidated 2012 budget.
  • December 22: Blog and JPeople discussion for community review along with draft budget, and leadership team mission statements, goals/priorities, milestones/action items/resources are published.
  • December 29: Public discussion closes.
  • January 2012: OSM votes to accept budget.
