The steady march to Joomla 1.6 picked up further steam recently with the release of the project's second alpha release.

Joomla 1.6 Alpha 2 became available last week, and shows the development team is making great strides toward a next generation Joomla.

Front and center in this new release is the long-awaited Access Control Level feature, or ACL. A first release of the "nested categories" and a new backend template made it in the second alpha as well.

With Joomla 1.6 getting closer to a beta release (anticipated sometime in the next few months), the Joomla leadership team is hosting the first-ever Joomla Developer Conference in early December.

One of the great things about working at Simplweb is helping people quickly and easily launch their Joomla websites. Two recent launches we had have been a news website about Haiti and a small business Veterinary Hospital in Waterbury, VT. Two very different sites. Infohaiti.net provides up to date news from Haiti in a high article volume blog type format, and all in the french language. Waterburyvethospital.com is a small business brochure site for a brand new vet clinic that aims to establish their web presence.

Last week the Joomla Project team released Joomla 1.5.12, codename "Wojmamni Ama Woi." No explanation for the Swahili meaning was given, but this version's various security and bug fixes are easily explained by checking out the project's 1.5.12 release.

Joomla! Multimedia – A Book Review about Images, Video and More… | Joomla Mulitimedia

I have previously blogged about online reputational management, but a more recent event came my way today, and I thought it was interesting to see the effects over a longer term, and the dismal response from the company involved.

Last year United Airlines hit the press about breaking somebody's guitar.

Not such huge news probably, United has lots of passengers, and probably damages lots of bags, but this guitar belonged to a singer who made a song and video about his trials.

The result was a MASSIVE fallout for United, with the video on YouTube getting millions of hits, and the story even making CNN.

What truly amazes me is when I search for "United Breaks Guitars" on Google, there are hundreds of results about this story, but nothing I can see from United.

Heck, there is even a Facebook and Wiki page about it now!

In my previous post I mentioned the fact that the Read More option of Joomla was not editable anymore. Before that I wrote about how-to-solve-the-joomla-read-more-problem in version 1.0.x But I found an item in RC3 in the Advanced Parameters of the article section that makes in possible to do an “Click here to read” text per article.. It is [...]

The Production Leadership Team (PLT) is the group of people that is responsible for keeping the machinery that produces the Joomla software maintained and in good working order.  The PLT aims to meet in person once or twice a year.  The last development related summit was held in Australia in January of 2009 and this meeting was pivotal for bringing in necessary changes to the organisational and communication structure of the Joomla production system, lowering the barriers to entry for contribution significantly.

The next PLT Summit will be held around the Joomla Day West in San Jose in October this year.  Prime focus will be given to establishing the policy and process we need to revise in order to make Joomla 1.7, and all future versions, happen in a more timely and efficient manner, and allow for innovation to be incorporated at a pace that keeps up with the dynamic flow of the part of the internet in which we reside. To help us plan for this summit, we'd like your suggestions for what you think might be important for us to talk about.  We only have two or three days together so we can't cover everything, but we'd like to know what's on your mind all the same whether you are a user, a developer, a designer or a site administrator.  If you have a suggestion, please post them using this form.

Finally, we must thanks the sponsors for this event which have offset the major costs that would otherwise have been bourn by PLT members personally.  Thanks go to eBay, Microsoft and Kontent Design for allowing us to make this event possible.

Joomla! Multimedia – A Book Review about Images, Video and More… | Joomla Mulitmedia

About 6 weeks ago Brad (S&I) posted a call for volunteers on the Joomla! homepage. We, from S&I, received quite a number of applications and there were very suitable applicants among them. Our goal, to get two new webmasters for the community.joomla.org site, improving site maintenance in overall.

I'm very pleased to announce that this call for volunteers worked out great. We can now introduce to you Airton Torres and Paul Orwig as the new webmasters. Both have already jumped in with enthusiasm, performing their new tasks as webmasters. Two partial quotes from there biography:

Paul has wanted to become more involved with supporting Joomla! as a direct result of how much both the software and the community have helped him and in turn the users of websites he has developed. He also has wanted to follow the great example which has been set by so many others who have freely given of their time to make Joomla! such a successful open source CMS.
Airton started developing small personal websites in 2005 while learning HTML and CSS. When his older brother asked him, in 2007, to create a web site for a Soar Flight Club he was a member of, Airton started looking for a CMS and found Joomla. After setting the web site up, he started to use the community forums to get help and was soon giving back to the community, sharing the little knowledge he had gathered so far.

If you as a community member have any ideas, question, or for example want to blog on the community site just post a request on the S&I forum and it will be picked up from there.

Joomla Project coordinator Wilco Jansen recently updated the Joomlaverse about the status of Joomla 1.6, the next version of Joomla. Joomla 1.6 is expected later in 2009, but is currently in pre-alpha stage.

Writing on the Joomla Project's Coordinator Blog, Jansen takes the reader through the thought process and development roadmap for Joomla 1.6. He outlines the updated list of features
that are certain to be in this next version of Joomla, including more
granula access control lev [...]

Joomla 1.6 Meta-Tag Changes and Improvements

25.11.10

Some of Joomla 1.6's search engine optimization (SEO) improvements have been lost in the buzz of excitement about ACL (permissions) and nested categories. After all, these are very tiny, incremental improvements -- but for those working with SEO in Joomla, they will make a tremendous difference.

The Joomlashack Difference

25.11.09

There are lots of places to buy a Joomla template - but Joomlashack is the only one to offer lifetime template updates and a 30 day money back guarantee! One of the defining characteristics of Joomla compared to other open source CMS's is the rich variety of professional templates that are available. There are, of course, the poorly coded sweatshop template sites, but lets take a look at a comparison of the others.

2011 goals and budget for the Joomla! project

27.05.11

As a new element of the planning and budget process, each Joomla! leadership team (Production Leadership Team, Community Leadership Team, and Open Source Matters) has set major goals for 2011. This goal setting effort has the following benefits:

  • Allows our project’s budget to be a more effective tool for supporting the project's planned priorities for the upcoming year.
  • Allows each leadership team to better understand what the other leadership teams are planning to work on, which will improve inter-team collaboration and support.
  • Allows the community to be aware of goals and priorities for the upcoming year, which will improve transparency and openness and enable increased support and volunteer contributions.
  • Will make it easier to bring in more sponsorship contributions, due to prospective sponsors having a better understanding about what initiatives their contributions will be supporting.

The major 2011 goals for each Joomla! leadership team are listed below. The goals are all numbered for reference purposes (but not as an indication of priority).
