The Joomla! project and Open Source Matters would like to invite the members of our community to take a look at the proposed 2011 budget and then submit your feedback through Monday April 18th.

A long and winding road...

We realize that unveiling our 2011 budget in April of 2011 doesn’t exceed expectations in the timeliness category. Even though this has much taken longer than we wanted, the good news is that some new planning and budgeting processes have been put into place that will enable  more inclusive and collaborative efforts moving forward, as well as enabling improved goal setting and planning among each of the Joomla! project’s leadership teams.

A collaborative effort

One element of these new processes consisted of forming a budget committee from members of the Production Leadership Team (Chris Davenport), the Community Leadership Team (Wendy Robinson and Matt Lipscomb) and the board of Open Source Matters (Phil Locke and Paul Orwig). This committee has been working together over a period of months to integrate each of the leadership team's revenue generating estimates and funding requests into a budget that is intended to help support the goals of each leadership team and continue to strengthen the Joomla! project’s overall financial position.

Goal setting included as part of planning process

Another new aspect of the budget process involved asking members of the Production Leadership Team (PLT), Community Leadership Team (CLT), and Open Source Matters (OSM) to each put some effort into planning their goals and priorities for 2011, as a predecessor to help them focus on what resources (financial and other) would be needed to achieve those goals. This planning effort has the following benefits:

  1. Allows our budget to be a more effective tool for supporting the project's planned priorities for the upcoming year.
  2. Allows each leadership team to better understand what the other leadership teams are planning to work on, which will improve inter-team collaboration and support.
  3. Allows the community to be aware of goals and priorities for the upcoming year, which will improve transparency and openness and enable increased support and volunteer contributions.
  4. Will make it easier to bring in more sponsorship contributions, due to prospective sponsors having a better understanding about what initiatives their contributions will be supporting.

Next steps

Once the community feedback period has closed, the following next steps will be taken to complete the formal approval of the 2011 budget:

  1. PLT, CLT, and OSM will review community feedback and offer suggestions.
  2. The budget committee will potentially revise the budget based on step 1.
  3. PLT, CLT, and OSM will review revised budget.
  4. OSM will formally review and (if acceptable) approve the budget.
  5. 2011 budget will be published, along with PLT, CLT, and OSM goals for 2011.

Joomla! Best PHP Open Source Content Management System | Joomla! Content Management System

kcw.jpgEmbedding videos in Joomla content can be a little tricky sometimes; with a stock Joomla site you really just have one main content area to bung embed code into, but you usually have a wysiwyg editor installed so that code gets messed up in html translation mistakenly or otherwise doesn't display whilst editing your content etc...  Of course, to make the job easier, extensions have emerged as plugins that let you use special tags in your content (such as Allvideos), but well, who wants to remember how to properly reference a 3rd-party hosted clip right?

I've been excited about Kaltura for some time - its an Open-source video platform which works just like some of the major commercial ones (eg. Brightcove.) - only its cheaper (free?) and has some cool tools to let your community remix videos right in your website - using a huge assortment of samples; from your collection to anything hosted on Kaltura member sites.

Kaltura just released an extension for Joomla and it looks pretty amazing; with it, you can:

  • upload/embed videos,
  • embed flickr/myspace video/photo/audio media in your articles,
  • manage media in a central control panel,
  • customize the embed player on your site,
  • edit and remix video to embed in your site and much more!

Now, Kaltura still doesn't solve the issue of embedding content from 3rd party hosts like youtube, vimeo, etc..; it seems to offer myspace video embeds (ahem, what?) and thats about it.. so you're still going to have to use somethign like the Allvideos plugin to easily embed them, but Kaltura can be a very easy way to upload and embed original video - you can upload video files or record directly from your webcam...

Part of a series of articles highlighting new features in Joomla 1.6. The Media Manager is a longstanding feature in Joomla. It came over from the Mambo days. Between Joomla 1.0 and 1.5, not many changes were made to the Media Manager. Along the way, the Media Manager even lost functionality, when it lost the ability to upload multiple images at once. Fortunately, the Media Manager has been granted a bit of love in Joomla 1.6. Let's take a look at some of the new features you can expect to find. Let's say you create a link to a single article in Joomla 1.5 (called an article layout). Beyond the standard items you could configure with Joomla 1.5, like the title, alias, parent, and so forth, there were some limited parameters you could set for the article: This past weekend, July 29-31, was the Joomla Leadership Summit, held at eBay in San Jose, California. Members of the Production Leadership Team (PLT), Community Leadership Team (CLT), and Open Source Matters (OSM) were in attendance for a discussion of the Joomla project, its leadership, and its future direction.

Joomla security - one of the most frequent topics of conversation among Joomie's (usability is a close second) - is a complex area and the technicalities of it quickly get ahead of most Joomla users. Often, it's a conversation about the reputation Joomla has about security that starts "Is Joomla secure?" People are often concerned about the seeming high number of hacked Joomla sites, and people defending Joomla pointing at the need to update 3rd party extensions or use good hosts. There are many specific things you can do to make your site secure. They range from the obvious to making sure folder permissions are correct on the server, to esoteric like changing the jos_ MySQL table prefix that Joomla uses. For 99% of sites, security boils down to: 1. Use a good host, that means paying more than $10 a month. 2. Backup lots. Be like Nike... Just DO it 3. Patch often. Joomla and all your extensions.

Joomla with its standard well thought out structure will give you a perfect platform to get your keyword clusters together and boost your website into the search engine ranking of your main keyword, just read here on how to set things right...

Yesterday I showed how to Hide Columns When Editing the Front End of Joomla as it often causes overlap issues that make editing difficult. In this post I'll show a quick and easy way to show different content to different users. Being able to show different content to registered and logged in visitors is a very common request for a Joomla site. By default, you can have Joomla show the "intro" copy to guests and they must to log in to see the rest. But what if you want to show some specific content to guest visitors, and then different content to registered users once they have logged in. There are a couple of extensions that give this functionality, but as a rule of thumb, I'll always trying and use the core if I can to get what I want. In this case, I figured out a simple method that worked for my needs.

If you haven't seen it yet, Joomlashack has a March basketball inspired 15% off everything sale this Wednesday through Friday.

Request for Comment: Joomla! Development Strategy

25.09.10

With the 1.6 development cycle coming to an end the Production Leadership Team has decided it is time to also start formalizing our changes to how we want to build Joomla into the future. We've been discussing the changes presented in this draft document with users and developers at Joomla events for the last year or more. Given the upcoming PLT summit surrounding the JoomlaDay in San Jose, CA (http://joomladaywest.com) we felt it would be best to present our draft document for review and comment. During the summit one of the things we will be discussing is the contents of this document and how we move forward with the changes we want to make in how Joomla is produced.

Download Joomla! Development Strategy 2.0: Draft »

We would greatly appreciate it if you can take a few minutes, read over the document and provide feedback at: http://goo.gl/BBrK.  The feedback that you give will help us refine any sections that might need clarification, or resolve any issues that may have been overlooked.

Note: We will not be monitoring the comments thread for feedback on the document so please, if you have feedback, use the form at http://goo.gl/BBrK.

Easy custom home page definition with Joomla 1.5

09.05.09

picture_20There's a really simple new approach to defining what a site's default homepage is now with Joomla 1.5: All you have to do is go to Menus>mainmenuand, select the menu item you'd like to be the homepage and hit the new 'Default' button - you'll see a star appear in the table row for that item.  Now, whenever people land at your site they'll see that page/view/component!

Joomla 1.7: Offline Access, the New Core Permission

05.07.11

For those of you working with access control lists (ACL) in Joomla 1.6, you should know about the new core permission that has been introduced in Joomla 1.7 beta. The new permission is called "offline access". This allows certain user groups to log into the front end of the website when the site is offline.

OSM Nomination and Election Process

19.11.10

The following draft text has been drawn up in order to clarify and further define the nomination and election process to OSM board positions. We invite you to submit your feedback via the Joomla! People site link at the bottom. Thank you!

Elections: Two calendar periods are generally planned for elections each year: April and October. Exceptions can be made if the board vitally needs specific skills (for example, if the Treasurer leaves).

Number of Board members: The recommended number of board members to carry out the responsibilities of OSM is 13. This number may fluctuate up to 15 or down to 11.

Term Limits: All future board appointments will be for one 2-year period with exceptions possible if the board vitally needs specific skills (Treasurer, Legal Council).

Selection Criteria:

  • Community: nominees should have a strong track record of successfully collaborating with, enabling others, and earning the respect of the Joomla! community.
  • Character: nominees should have demonstrated integrity, with a history of acting honestly, fairly and openly when in leadership roles.
  • Experience and Expertise: nominees being proposed for specific roles should have strong experience and expertise in those areas.
  • Success: nominees should be able to point to a history of success and leaving previous roles in a better state than when they arrived.
  • Diversity: our goal is to work toward, and honor gender and cultural diversity. We are committed to seeking nominations from all talented and dedicated members of our international Joomla! community.

Election Procedure:

  • Public nominations open on the 1st of the month and close on the 14th. Nominations must be made with the agreement of the nominee.
  • The OSM board examines the candidates and suggests names to the Community Oversight Committee (COC) before the end of the month.
  • The COC approval takes 10 business days to approve or reject the names.
  • OSM contacts the successful and unsuccessful nominees.
