Do you have questions about Joomla? We know you do. Whether it's a question about how to do something, what the Joomla roadmap is, what the project has planned, how to contribute to the project, or anything else, we'd like to hear from you. Jen and Barrie will pick answers to address in the newsletter. Post your question in the comment thread below, and we'll work on getting some answers to you! Joomla - A User's Guide is the best selling book on Joomla, has been translated into over 6 languages, and is the highest reviewed title on Joomla at Amazon.com. Now you can get your own signed copy by signing up for Joomla hosting at Simplweb. Joomlashack has two great Joomla template releases, Cascada and Nuvo. Cascada is a cool & refreshing Joomla 1.5 template and is packed with enough features to satisfy Joomla novices and power-users alike! Nuvo is ultra-modern, sleek, powerful and designed to give you maximum control over the appearance of your site (without ever having to touch a line of HTML or CSS code), Nuvo puts you in the driver's seat!
Last week at Simplweb we blogged about adding module positions to your offline page to make the content more useful and to add a Mailchimp signup form. The technique was being used at the Waterbury Vet Hospital, a new veterinary clinic in Waterbury Vermont.
The domain for this site was only purchased 8 days ago, but using these techniques and a Joomla powered website from Simplweb, the customer's site, www.waterburyvethospital.com, is already ranking #5 in Google!

Need great extensions like AdAgency or DigiStore?
iJoomla has a Halloween sale of 25% off. This offer turns into a pumpkin Tuesday, November 2nd at midnight!
Last week Mark wrote the first Production Working Group Leadership status blog.  At last Saturday's meeting, for some strange reason I volunteered to write one this week.
Work continues on 1.6.  As Mark stated last week, the biggest task remaining for the release of 1.6 is ACL.  The other night Louis showed me some mockups of one of the UI widgets and they look quite sharp.  It is pretty exciting to see this much sought after feature finally starting to come together.  Hannes and Andrew have also been working hard to get all of the pieces together.  Once this gets to a workable stage we will be really close to 1.6 going beta!  Keep an eye on the branches in the SVN to get a look at what is happening.
The other area of focus is the Joomla! Labs Project. As most are aware, one of the struggles we've had as a project is figuring out how to open our doors to fresh developers. The Labs Project is one piece of the puzzle that will change the way we do development.  Stay tuned for more details.
Well, those are the highlights - we've come so far with 1.6 yet we still have some distance to travel as we head towards the beta process.  Can't wait!
Finding the right domain name for your Joomla website can be very difficult, so here are some ideas and tips on how to find the right one for you.

How to Optimize your Joomla site with Keywords | Optimize Joomla Keywords
Last week I posted about Reputational Management in Twitter, interestingly enough, this concept of online reputational management seems to be cropping up more and more on my radar.
There are even web applications springing up that will aggregate online references to yourself and searching for "web reputation management" get's over 800,000 hits.
Only this morning I see an interesting example chirping its ways through the Twit-o-Sphere about some dubious reporting abo [...]
I love iContact because I believe it's the best email newsletter and marketing service

Just finished my presentation about Black Belt Joomla at the 2011 New England Joomla day. It's an evolution of the talk I have given in previous years at CMS Expo and other Joomla days showing tricks and traps about Joomla you need to know to make your website more successful. This year I have added a whole new part about how to properly consider Social Networks like Facebooka and Twitter into your web strategy.Source
Proposed PLT 2012 Goals
11.11.11
As part of the normal budgeting process, the Production Leadership Team has come up with four goals for 2012. Those goals concern releases of the Joomla Platform and the Joomla CMS, continuing maintenance updates, and outreach and promotion to a technical audience.
Wordpress vs Joomla, part 1
09.05.09
NOTE: Rather than posting an exhaustive comparison of the two, this will be the first post in a series looking at what sets them apart and why you would be better off with either in particular situations.
Both Joomla and Wordpress are industry-leading Open Source publishing platforms that make it simple for people with no knowledge of HTML to create blogs and publish pages to their website easily and quickly.
However, they are each built for different core audiences - Wordpress is essentially a blogging tool; extending its feature set beyond blogging requires the use of FTP and custom code - so it is best suited for individuals and small organizations who have an on-going relationship with a web developer who can provide upgrade and feature developments for them.  This isn't to say that it can't be used to create highly usable websites with creative aesthetics; but just that doing this takes more elbow grease than with, say, Joomla.
Out-of-the-box, Joomla allows users to create dynamic websites which incorporate a powerful menu system that allows dynamic displays of content - not only for blogs but other lists or tables of content items, with just a few clicks of a button.  Innately, Joomla websites can be grown by uploading sub-programs (eg an e-commerce package or discussion forum) directly through the admin interface in a browser- no need for ftp or dealing with any code whatsoever; Joomla offers more powerful yet easier scalability than Wordpress.
Another major feature that sets the two apart is the ability to edit posts from the front-end; managing a Joomla site can be much faster and visually understandable as only admins need to see/use a dashboard/admin side of the site - anyone with content submission/editing permissions can simply log into the front end of a site, be shown the edit button [or submit new content] and make changes live to the site.
Review of 16 Joomla Books from Amazon
11.02.10
I have had a couple of emails this week from people asking me about Joomla book recommendations. Back in 2006 when the first edition of my book on Joomla was published, there were hardly any others around. Its been great to see that over the last 12 months we have seen a lot more published. As an author, its encouraging to see the growth, but even more, I think that the volume and pace of book publication is a pretty good indicator of the health of an open source project. I thought I'd take a second to do a round up of 16 Joomla titles around right now. I thought I would pull some metrics from Amazon to give you a sense of how much people like the offerings (rather than my own opinions).
SourceHelp Wanted for the Joomla! Events Team
07.07.11
Since the start of the Joomla! Project we have had an Events Team. This team created the Joomla!Day Charter and helped create the first of many Joomla!Days. Over time, the Joomla!Day organizers became more professional and the help of the Events Team was not as necessary.
Without a clear description of responsibilities or concept as to what this team should or can do, activities have reached a very low level: near zero, if we try to paraphrase it a little bit.
On the other hand, we have a lot of things in terms of events to do and to optimise. With this request for help I’ll try to fill the gaps.
What happened to ?tp=1 in Joomla 1.6?
15.01.11
I've seen several people ask the question now: what happened to ?tp=1 in Joomla 1.6?
For those who have no idea what ?tp=1 means, this is a method to show locations of module positions within a Joomla template.
