Joomla! Multimedia – A Book Review about Images, Video and More… | Joomla Mulitmedia

05.07.10

I received a review copy of Joomla! 1.5 Multimedia from Packt Publishers and was expecting to read a lot that I already know about Images and the image manager in Joomla!. But instead it was an eye-opener about the possibilities that Joomla! and some special extensions gives you to create a complete multimedia experience for your visitors. This [...]

Joomla! Multimedia – A Book Review about Images, Video and More… | Joomla Mulitmedia

In a recent workshop at the Marlboro College Graduate School, a student complained that she was unable to figure out how to post her Facebook "fan box" on her Joomla site. For those of you working with access control lists (ACL) in Joomla 1.6, you should know about the new core permission that has been introduced in Joomla 1.7 beta. The new permission is called "offline access". This allows certain user groups to log into the front end of the website when the site is offline. Yesterday I showed how to Hide Columns When Editing the Front End of Joomla as it often causes overlap issues that make editing difficult. In this post I'll show a quick and easy way to show different content to different users. Being able to show different content to registered and logged in visitors is a very common request for a Joomla site. By default, you can have Joomla show the "intro" copy to guests and they must to log in to see the rest. But what if you want to show some specific content to guest visitors, and then different content to registered users once they have logged in. There are a couple of extensions that give this functionality, but as a rule of thumb, I'll always trying and use the core if I can to get what I want. In this case, I figured out a simple method that worked for my needs.

We are excited to announce that Simplweb has launched a new addition to its Joomla hosting SaaS platform to make sites ultra-secure and safe from would-be hackers.

Simplweb already provides a much higher level of security than traditional Joomla hosts with our internal active monitoring systems. We have now partnered with SecureLive.net, the most effective global security system ever engineered. Over 60 Million hacks blocked, thousands of hackers shut down and many active prosecutions. SecureLive is a live and real time service that runs in the background. It detects, blocks and then reports hacking attempts to your site.

This past weekend, I went to Joomla Day Chicago to give a talk on Joomla 1.7 Access Control Lists (ACL). I posted my slides on SlideShare, and I was surprised to find out how popular they were!

Joomla 2.5 is due out in January, which is the culmination of the 1.6/1.7/2.5 series. Now is the time to be mapping out those things we want to accomplish in the next series, which will culminate in the 3.5 release in July 2013.

At the recent joint summit we discussed the process for establishing goals and milestones for the long-term Joomla releases. We want more seats at the table for the technical discussions on how to move things forward. Once every six months the PLT and developers will meet just before or after an existing event to work on the roadmap.

Our first Roadmap Meeting will be on Friday, October 21, 2011 in New York City, the day before Joomla! Day NYC 2011. This is a working session that is open to anyone interested in working on designing or creating features for the next major release of Joomla. Our goal is to come out of this meeting with working documents for implementing different features.

There is no cost to attend the event but you must register in advance. Not everyone with an interest in working on this will be able to attend in person so we are exploring options for including virtual attendees.

We encourage everyone to have a voice and to vote or add ideas to the Idea Pool at ideas.joomla.org.

For details, see the posting in News at the Developer site.

Comments are welcome and can be shared in at the JPeople site in this thread

Last night, Joomla 1.6.6 was released. You may be a bit confused by this because of some previous discussions about migration paths to Joomla 1.7.

Over the last week weeks I have be preparing for my graduate class (starts Saturday!) on Web 2.0 Marketing with Joomla. I was on the lookout for a simple plugin that could provide a Tweet this link to twitter and show it in blog posts and articles.

I was surprised that I couldn't find one, apart from the Javascript "tweetmeme" script. This works well, but inserts *their* twitter name into the tweet.

So, I pinged Fotis at Joomlaworks and we collaborated on an easy sol [...]

Since the start of the Joomla! Project we have had an Events Team.  This team created the Joomla!Day Charter and helped create the first of many Joomla!Days. Over time, the Joomla!Day organizers became more professional and the help of the Events Team was not as necessary.

Without a clear description of responsibilities or concept as to what this team should or can do, activities have reached a very low level: near zero, if we try to paraphrase it a little bit.

On the other hand, we have a lot of things in terms of events to do and to optimise. With this request for help I’ll try to fill the gaps.

Want to sharpen your Web 2.0 marketing skills and learn some Joomla at the same time?

This spring I am co-teaching a 3 credit 15 week graduate course at Marlboro College Graduate Center with Jen McKibben (of New England User group fame).

The blurb reads:

"This course explores the power and practice of Web 2.0 marketing.
Including and going well beyond the simple "how to" of integrating
social networking sites into your campaign, this course challenges [...]

The success of any software release in an Open Source project depends on people getting involved, and Joomla! 1.6 is no exception. As we get closer to a stable Joomla! 1.6 release I wanted to take a moment and go over the timeline to stable and how you can play a part in making it better, faster.

Packt CMS AwardsWe are excited that the Packt Publishing Best Joomla! Theme award includes our own Joomla template Inspirion.

This Award features five finalist Joomla! themes and extensions that have been selected by the Joomla! project representatives.

thumb_screen I've been a huge fan of Drupal's Content Creation Kit for a long time - its a module that extends the core content functionality of Drupal, allowing you to create different types of 'content' - made up of a variety of fields such as embedded media (photo/video/etc...), email links, html/web links and so on.  CCK's architecture is scalable and allows for 3rd party developers to add new fields to it as additional modules; so the usefullness of CCK grows exponentially in time.

Actually, for a time I saw this amazing module really setting joomla and drupal apart - as, Joomla felt really limited in its potential to grow beyond a CMS and become let's say, an 'application framework.'  However, I'm excited to report today that this is all about to change...

For the first part of the 2012 budget process, the CLT has come up with the following goals.

Goal #1: Final Rollout of the New Site Templates

Task: Rollout each new site template as they are ready

Task: Open up a channel where people can provide feedback and report any usage issues

Task: Respond to reported issues

Target Date for Completion: As they are ready, between now and February 2012

Resources required: Volunteer time.

Goal #2: Assess the amount of data channels currently in use and try to condense where possible

Task: Have a team of individuals from the CLT perform an analysis of the current community channels and see where some merging of resources and content can be done.

Task: Combine research into a document to share with the CLT and request community feedback as well.

Target Date for completion: February 2012

Resources required: Volunteer time.

Goal #3: Rollout Paid features for JRD/JED Directories.

Task: Implement payment system

Task: Define rules and guidelines, terms and conditions

Task: Testing period before launch

Target Date for completion: January 2012 for task #1 and #3. As soon as requested legal guidance is provided for Task #2

Resources Required: Legal guidance and documentation, which needs to be provided through OSM. This has been requested, currently waiting for that information.

Goal #4: Template Directory (JTD) Launch

Task: Launch a working version of the Template Directory

Task: Recruit a team of editors and put it to work

Resources Required:

  • Legal guidance and documentation to determine that the Terms of Use for the site are aligned with our ™
  • Possible Travel for team members to meet face to face
  • Volunteer time is also required.

Target Date for completion: February 2012

We'd like to thank all of the volunteers on the various CWG teams who have helped to make the above goals possible for 2012. The Joomla community is lucky to have so many hard working people making these exciting things happen!

We invite the community to provide feedback here in the CWG group of the Joomla People site: http://people.joomla.org/groups/viewdiscussion/1371-2012-proposed-clt-goals.html?groupid=398

As part of my new Joomla 1.6 book, I have two free Joomla 1.6 templates you can download. They are Fresh and Optimus, originally developed at Joomalshack and ported by me to Joomla 1.6. Fresh was used in the chapter about using Joomla 1.6 to develop school websites. Optimus was used in the chapter about using Joomla 1.6 to develop blog websites.

Jom Social vs Community Builder (round 1)

09.05.09

cbvsjs.jpgFor those new to these extensions, Community Builder is one of the oldest (and possibly most used) Joomla extensions.  It has a plugin system and lets you quickly develop user profiles for logged in members; with custom fields and member lists.  Because its Open Source and how long its been around, there are a ton of plugins to give you google maps of your members, on-going/live (facebook wall-type) listings of member activity on their profiles and more.

Jom Social isn't Open Source.  Its a commercial release from the Malaysian web development firm Azrul Studio.  They're well known for simple blogging and commenting extensions and have recently released Jom Social - which pretty much gives you the same functionality as Community Builder for $100+ but doesn't require must setup/configuration once installed.

There's been discussion in the Joomla forums about this topic before and I think people are most concerned about the lock-in factor of using commercial software plus the question of how integrated JomSocial is to Joomla itself.

Before I jump into a comprehensive review next week, I wanted to ask for your thoughts on Community Builder vs Jom Social. (Post comments! :) )

Joomla 1.7: Expanded User Profiles

03.09.11

How many times have you built a site, and your client asked you for some additional information about users who register for the site? They wanted to collect their mailing address, date of birth, a favorite book, or even they just wanted them to accept the terms of service. Unfortunately, in Joomla 1.5, you would have had to install a complex extension like Community Builder to acheive this functionality. Now, however, it's built into Joomla 1.7.

Production Leadership Team Summit 2010

13.08.10

The Production Leadership Team (PLT) is the group of people that is responsible for keeping the machinery that produces the Joomla software maintained and in good working order.  The PLT aims to meet in person once or twice a year.  The last development related summit was held in Australia in January of 2009 and this meeting was pivotal for bringing in necessary changes to the organisational and communication structure of the Joomla production system, lowering the barriers to entry for contribution significantly.

The next PLT Summit will be held around the Joomla Day West in San Jose in October this year.  Prime focus will be given to establishing the policy and process we need to revise in order to make Joomla 1.7, and all future versions, happen in a more timely and efficient manner, and allow for innovation to be incorporated at a pace that keeps up with the dynamic flow of the part of the internet in which we reside. To help us plan for this summit, we'd like your suggestions for what you think might be important for us to talk about.  We only have two or three days together so we can't cover everything, but we'd like to know what's on your mind all the same whether you are a user, a developer, a designer or a site administrator.  If you have a suggestion, please post them using this form.

Finally, we must thanks the sponsors for this event which have offset the major costs that would otherwise have been bourn by PLT members personally.  Thanks go to eBay, Microsoft and Kontent Design for allowing us to make this event possible.
