Joomla 1.7 stripping out code? Here's the fix

11.10.11

Increasingly, websites are offering a bit of HTML you can paste into your site to show some cool feature: Facebook or Twitter feeds, YouTube videos, badges from site or another. You try copying and pasting the HTML into a Joomla article or a custom HTML module, and you find that the code gets stripped, removing critical tags like script or iframe, so it doesn't work correctly. Then you try to go find a Joomla extension that will allow you to post the information. It's frustrating!

Right now the hottest online businesses are online membership websites. Whether learning how to create email newsletters or networking for partners, subscription based membership sites are *the* way to generate revenue from your own expertise.

The two pieces to the puzzle to be successful with your membership website are expert help and guidance, and a powerful platform.

The success of any software release in an Open Source project depends on people getting involved, and Joomla! 1.6 is no exception. As we get closer to a stable Joomla! 1.6 release I wanted to take a moment and go over the timeline to stable and how you can play a part in making it better, faster.

The much anticipated launch of our online Joomla training course for Beginner Joomla-ites, Joomlashack University, did not disappoint last week. In less than 24 hours we sold out all 100 seats in the inaugural Shack U class of October 2009- and then some!

Joomlashack University is our attempt to make learning Joomla online a fun, interactive, affordable, and "at your own pace" experience. Instructors Forest Linden and Barrie North are guiding the first class through the very basics of getting a Joomla website installed, set up, and built with compelling content.

We're limiting the number of beginner students in our "Charter Class" to keep "class size" small, so we can lavish attention on our students and get the curriculum right. In November we'll re-open ShackU and let another class of eager online learners in!

Joomlashack has two great Joomla template releases, Cascada and Nuvo. Both are packed with the usual Joomlashack SEO features, dynamic 3 column layouts and come in multiple colors. Cascada is a cool & refreshing Joomla 1.5 template and is packed with enough features to satisfy Joomla novices and power-users alike! Nuvo is ultra-modern, sleek, powerful and designed to give you maximum control over the appearance of your site (without ever having to touch a line of HTML or CSS code), Nuvo puts you in the driver's seat! Simplweb is looking to add to its support team to meet its growing customer needs. You would be part of a collaborative team working to help Simplweb customers create successful Joomla powered websites. This is a part time position that is a gateway to full time work with Simplweb.

Need a web app to serve your databases online? Look no further than FlexLists from MovingLabs. One of our Simplweb customers, the Upper Valley Educators Institute, needed to make their library database available to all their student interns online. Help with these non-hosting questions is all part of the service at Simplweb, so we took some time to find FlexLists.

Donate TodayJoomlashack's annual holiday charitable campaign is back with a new twist: We'll match your donations!

For the fourth year, Joomlashack is rallying our community to support a worthy charity during the holiday season.

This year we're supporting the important humanitarian efforts of Doctors without Borders (aka Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF.)

For every dollar contributed by our community, Joomlashack will match up to a total of $1,000. Other partners may match even more!

What is Médecins Sans Frontières?

Open Source Matters (OSM) is entrusted with providing organizational, legal, and financial support for the Joomla! project. You can find out more about the organization at http://www.opensourcematters.org.

Given those responsibilities, and the recent departure of two long-serving board members, and the OSM officer changes resulting in the election of the Treasurer to President, the decision has been made to expand the board once more.

We are looking for your nominations for new OSM board members.

We acknowledge that the greater worldwide Joomla! community can help us a lot in this election process, and make us aware of potential candidates we may overlook.

Nomination Information

We are looking for up to three new board members. Useful areas of experience and expertise include:

  • Accounting, bookkeeping or financial
  • Legal or trademark
  • Organizational or managerial skills
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Fund-raising
  • PR and Marketing
  • Education or certification development work
  • Events planning and support

Nomination Criteria

We are looking to recruit the very best and the brightest members in the Joomla! community.

Some of the criteria that will be used when evaluating nominations include:

  • Community: the nominee should have a strong track-record of successfully collaborating with, enabling others and earning the respect of the Joomla! community.
  • Character: the nominee should have proven themselves a person of high character, with a history of acting honestly, fairly and openly when in leadership roles.
  • Experience and Expertise: if the nominee is being proposed for a specific role, they should have strong experience and expertise in that area.
  • Success: the nominee should be able to point to a history of success and leaving previous roles in a better state than when they arrived.
  • Diversity: to work towards gender balance and geographical diversity, we are committed to seeking nominations from talented members of the Joomla! community who are female and / or are fluent speakers of languages other than English.

picture_9I just came across a site running Joomla thats been setup for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Orchestra to publish news and general information about the orchestra etc.

The site's fairly simple and, like many other quick'n'dirty Joomla sites out there, uses a Joomlashack template.  Though its been put together a little spottily (menu item assignments don't seem to be uniform through the site so some pages don't feature the full navigation etc...), this site really reminded me how pervasive Joomla is for people who want just a tad more than say, a Wordpress blog.

For the '08 Beijing Olympic Orchestra that 'tad more' simply translates to multiple blog views of different content.  In fact, they have even implemented a really simple gallery by just embedding images into content items and linking them together using a lightbox extension - which is quite clever when you don't have a gajillion images that need tags and complex photo information etc...

hiderI've had my eye on Dioscouri for a little while - they're the Joomla services guys that released JUGA, or Joomla User Group Access - an extension which gives you control over registered user groups and the power to define content access per group & category/section.

Well, they've obviously given a lot of thought to this whole idea of ACL and I like the most recent little extension they've released; called Hider .  As you might imagine, it lets you simply hide certain areas of content from public site viewers.

Ultimately, this might get messy if you have a lot of content with embedded tags all over the place to display certain info to certain user types, but for simple uses I could really see it being handy.

There are lots of email marketing services: iContact, Mailchimp, Aweber etc etc.

But I don't think there has been a scientific test and review of how well they deliver, all of them give their deliverability rates, but how can we compare them?

I need your help to do this very test and compare these services, here's how...

The test is a simple one, gather a test group of volunteers (that's you) and then get a subscription to each service. We'll then send out an identic[...]

Since the start of the Joomla! Project we have had an Events Team.  This team created the Joomla!Day Charter and helped create the first of many Joomla!Days. Over time, the Joomla!Day organizers became more professional and the help of the Events Team was not as necessary.

Without a clear description of responsibilities or concept as to what this team should or can do, activities have reached a very low level: near zero, if we try to paraphrase it a little bit.

On the other hand, we have a lot of things in terms of events to do and to optimise. With this request for help I’ll try to fill the gaps.

Joomla 1.7 now features a terrific redirect component, which will make preventing 404 page not found errors in your site redesigns and migrations much easier. This component is particularly important now that many are starting to migrate their sites from Joomla 1.5 to 1.7.

Inspirion Joomla TemplateJoomlashack's Inspirion Joomla Template is one of the most innovative templates currently on the market. Its built using the 960 grid, a CSS system that gives you a tableless layout and a fast loading site, great for SEO!

Its one of the first commercial professional templates to validate XHTML Strict. This is a high benchmark t[...]

Joomlafeed.com looking for community feedback

09.05.09

picture_4A few years ago we created a site called JoomlaFeed - our mission was to create an online space where people interested in Joomla could catch up on news from across the Web; including snippets from the Core Team as well as extension developers, community advocates and a host of others.

The site's been successful in so far as having a number of people subscribe to its aggregated RSS feeds as well as visit joomlafeed.com regularly but I think it can do more.

So, we're taking the occasion for rebuilding JoomlaFeed in Joomla 1.5 as an opportunity to see what you all think of the site and would like from it.

Please visit http://www.joomlafeed.com and post your comments! (There's a link at the top of the site)

Chicago CMS Expo Roundup

09.05.09

Just got back from a great two days at the 2009 Chicago CMS Expo. It was great to see dev's from Drupal and Plone rubbing shoulders with the Joomla regulars.

I had an opportunity to have a quick interview with SDRnews, and gave away some pre-release copies of the Joomla! 1.5: A User's Guide (2nd Edition)

At the Joint Leadership Summit (JLS) held in San Jose, California from July 29-31, 2011, one subject which received a lot of attention was our project’s leadership structure. It was widely felt that making some changes to our project’s leadership structure can strengthen communication and collaboration between teams, as well as improve oversight and accountability for all contributors and teams.
