New Ultra Secure Joomla Hosting from Simplweb

29.06.11

We are excited to announce that Simplweb has launched a new addition to its Joomla hosting SaaS platform to make sites ultra-secure and safe from would-be hackers.

Simplweb already provides a much higher level of security than traditional Joomla hosts with our internal active monitoring systems. We have now partnered with SecureLive.net, the most effective global security system ever engineered. Over 60 Million hacks blocked, thousands of hackers shut down and many active prosecutions. SecureLive is a live and real time service that runs in the background. It detects, blocks and then reports hacking attempts to your site.

For those of you working with access control lists (ACL) in Joomla 1.6, you should know about the new core permission that has been introduced in Joomla 1.7 beta. The new permission is called "offline access". This allows certain user groups to log into the front end of the website when the site is offline.

hiderI've had my eye on Dioscouri for a little while - they're the Joomla services guys that released JUGA, or Joomla User Group Access - an extension which gives you control over registered user groups and the power to define content access per group & category/section.

Well, they've obviously given a lot of thought to this whole idea of ACL and I like the most recent little extension they've released; called Hider .  As you might imagine, it lets you simply hide certain areas of content from public site viewers.

Ultimately, this might get messy if you have a lot of content with embedded tags all over the place to display certain info to certain user types, but for simple uses I could really see it being handy.

Last week the Joomla Project team released Joomla 1.5.12, codename "Wojmamni Ama Woi." No explanation for the Swahili meaning was given, but this version's various security and bug fixes are easily explained by checking out the project's 1.5.12 release.

The notes on Joomla.org[...]

Today I'd like to announce a new project by the Joomla! team called 'Joopal'. Joopal is a new CMS featuring the power of objects offered to you by Joomla! with the immense hook system delivered to you by Drupal. Joopal is based on Joomla! 1.5 and features Drupal 6 the way PHP5 meant it to be done: with objects instead of globals and incredibly long function names. Joopal is compatible with the Drupal 6 functions and maintains all of those globals for backwards compatibility whilst providing a new object orientated approach to the functions you know and love.

The power of Joomla! with Drupal configurability

Joopal permits you to use your traditional Drupal blocks anywhere a Joomla! module can do and also allows you to integrate Drupal's modules as if they were a normal Joomla! component. This permits your Joomla! site to pick and choose the features and functionality you need against two of the world's most popular content management systems!

Development Evolved

Joopal provides developers with the power of the Joomla! Web Application Framework as well as Drupal 6's many interfaces. Joopal allows Joomla! developers to leverage features found in Drupal and allows Drupal developers to discover the joys of objects. For Drupal developers, objects are a recently added to PHP in version 3 that permit encapsulation of your data and providing tools to permit the removal of globals from your code.

But it doesn't stop there! In addition to creating object orientated versions of the Drupal Core in addition to the function/global system, you can seemlessly use Joomla!'s Framework complete with on demand autoloading objects.  With two popular frameworks behind you, there is no way you can go wrong!

Getting Involved

Like Joomla!, Joopal is a community driven project and we need you to help us out! Joopal needs Drupal testers to help port their components and reveal issues with the system. Joopal also welcomes any developers wanting to fix issues and improve Joopal by submitting patches or even working in a more dedicated role. With Joopal and your involvement, anything is possible! So what are you waiting for, sign up the the Joomla! Development General mailing list and start working on Joopal today!

One of the blogging philosophies I tried to keep to is to use this site is to use it as a test case for Joomla. I figure, at the very least I can provide information with real world examples of different ways you can screw up running a blog, and things you should avoid!

My day to day is spent over at Joomlashack, and sometimes this site doesn't get the care and attention it needs, so last week I gave it some love and attention. What I found was how much is to what extent your host can effect your "SEO"

Seeds of Destruction by Glenn Hubbard websiteThe Seeds of Destruction is a new book by Glenn Hubbard, and amazon bestseller, and the Glenn needed an author website to publicize it.

www.glennhubbard.net is this high-profile economist's microsite and archive of his published work, video interviews and press mentions.

Using Simplweb as a platform for her Joomla hosting, site designer Judith O'Neill was able to launch quickly and easily.

Wordpress for Joomla! Training now available in Joomlashack University If you want to blog, Wordpress is a great platform. If you want a blog inside a bigger site, then you can certainly use Joomla for it, I do at www.compassdesigns.net. But why not harness the blogging power of Wordpress inside your Joomla site? Joomlashack just released a very informative, in-depth training lesson in Joomlashack University on how to set up and use the Wordpress for Joomla! extension by corePHP.

The Joomla! Extensions Directory Team is proud to announce a new set of guidelines for the once Top Secret Editor's Picks!  With no new selections since 2008 and only 8 current listings, it's was past time to review our procedures and add new ones.  ThroughoutEditor's Picks discussions many ideas were brought up on how to handle the selection process.  To bring in community involvement, a nomination form has now been created.  The criteria for selection is listed on the nomnation form below.  The nomination process closes in 7 days, so make sure to get yours in quickly!

Selections will be announced by the end of October 2010 and the process will repeat every 6 months.  If an Editor's Picks is currently listed, that does not mean that it will be listed in the new round of selections.  Additionally, team members with listings in the directory have self-excluded from the selection process.  You may nominate as many as you wish!

A total selection of up to 60 Editor's Picks will be chosen (about 1% of the entire listings).

Happy nominating and good luck!

With the release of Joomla 1.6 RC1, one of the first areas of this new version of Joomla to catch the attention of the community is the ACL portion of the site. ACL stands for Access Control Levels. Many people think of ACL as "who can see what" on the website. For example, when I log into the website, I can see articles A, B, and C. But when you log into the website, you see articles A, C, D, and F. That is definitely a part of ACL, but it's only a small part of the whole picture. ACL also controls who can create, edit, delete, publish, or configure what, and who is the administrator for the website. Adding this level of ACL creates significant complexity for your Joomla website.

Yesterday, Heidi and I met with a wonderful group of women running a startup. They have a Joomla website, but they have had a nightmare dealing with their Joomla developer. Time after time, they have requested something to be done on their site, their developer says no problem, and the developer fails to deliver. Furthermore, the developer would send them invoices, charging hours and hours of time for "research", which never materialized into a solution for their problems. The client was funding this developer's learning curve, to no benefit of their own website!

Over the last few months we've been having some changes around the development team and how things are working. We've got a few changes coming up, but I'll start with the people changes that are happening.

I'm pleased to announce that the OSM Board has new leaders filling critical roles in our organization.

During the past few months, I've spearheaded a project inside Open Source Matters (OSM) to delineate clear roles and responsibilities for a few important positions within our organization.  The goal of this project was to enable our team to more effectively match board members' talents with positions that set them up for success and provided clear objectives and responsibilities.  By putting this project into action, Board members are able to clearly understand what is expected of them within each position, as well as measure their success more objectively with metrics developed by them and their fellow teammates.

This project also provides the Board an opportunity to have a written understanding of the scope these positions.  In the professionalizing of our Board, I strongly believe that actually writing down these positions roles and responsibilities are key to us achieving our goals, and keeping our sanity.  I've even gone as far as to tell candidates for Board positions that one of their key goals should be to find ways to make themselves "obsolete", or in other words, ensure that when it's time for them to hand over their leadership position to another colleague, the new leader can focus on innovation rather than needing to rebuild systems from scratch.

Upcoming Joomla Days

17.08.11

If you've never attended a Joomla Day event, you are missing out on great fun! Joomla Days are the Joomla community's regional events, spreading the word about Joomla and showing how it works. Each Joomla Day is a unique experience, happening in a variety of environments, with different tracks and themes. One thing they all hold in common, though, is terrific networking, making new friends and catching up with old ones, putting faces to those social networking names, and beer.

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Orchestra uses Joomla

09.05.09

picture_9I just came across a site running Joomla thats been setup for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Orchestra to publish news and general information about the orchestra etc.

The site's fairly simple and, like many other quick'n'dirty Joomla sites out there, uses a Joomlashack template.  Though its been put together a little spottily (menu item assignments don't seem to be uniform through the site so some pages don't feature the full navigation etc...), this site really reminded me how pervasive Joomla is for people who want just a tad more than say, a Wordpress blog.

For the '08 Beijing Olympic Orchestra that 'tad more' simply translates to multiple blog views of different content.  In fact, they have even implemented a really simple gallery by just embedding images into content items and linking them together using a lightbox extension - which is quite clever when you don't have a gajillion images that need tags and complex photo information etc...
